The Bay Medical Practice – A Training Practice

The Bay Medical Practice – A Training Practice

At The Bay Medical Practice, we are proud to be a teaching and training practice, committed to supporting the development of future healthcare professionals. We provide training placements for medical students, foundation doctors, and GP trainees at different stages of their careers.

Our experienced GPs and teaching staff supervise and mentor trainees, ensuring they gain valuable experience in delivering high-quality patient care within a general practice setting.

What is a Training Practice?

A training practice is a GP surgery accredited to train doctors and medical students. As part of this, we host:

  • GP Specialty Trainees (ST1, ST2, ST3) – Doctors training to become GPs, working under supervision while gradually gaining independence.
  • Foundation Year Doctors (FY1, FY2) – Junior doctors who are in their first or second year of post-medical school training, gaining experience in general practice.
  • Medical Students – Undergraduate medical students from UK medical schools who observe and learn about primary care.

These trainees work closely with our experienced GPs, nurses, and multidisciplinary team to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence in general practice.

Who Oversees Training at the Practice?

We have a team of dedicated educators and trainers responsible for supervising, mentoring, and supporting our trainees.

Our Teaching and Training Team Includes:

  • GP Trainers – Qualified doctors responsible for overseeing the training of GP trainees (ST1, ST2, ST3).
  • Educational Supervisors – Senior GPs who provide guidance, assess progress, and support foundation doctors and medical students.
  • Nurse Trainers – Senior nurses who support student nurses and trainee advanced clinical practitioners.
  • Multidisciplinary Teaching Staff – Including pharmacists, paramedics, and advanced nurse practitioners, who provide specialist teaching in their areas.

Our practice is regularly assessed by the General Medical Council (GMC) and Health Education England (HEE) to ensure we meet the highest standards in training and education.

What Does This Mean for Our Patients?

  • You may see a GP trainee or foundation doctor during your appointment. They work under close supervision and discuss cases with a senior GP.
  • Your consultation may be recorded for training purposes. This will only happen with your full consent, and recordings are used strictly for educational purposes before being securely deleted.
  • You may be asked if a medical student can observe your consultation. This helps students learn from real-life practice. You always have the right to decline.

We appreciate your support in helping train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Benefits of Being a Training Practice

  • Encourages high standards of care – Training practices are regularly reviewed to ensure excellent patient care and teaching quality.
  • Brings fresh ideas and enthusiasm – Trainees contribute new knowledge and approaches from their academic studies.
  • Ensures future GP recruitment – Many trainees remain in the local area after qualifying, helping sustain high-quality healthcare services.

How to Provide Feedback

We welcome patient feedback about your experience with a GP trainee or medical student. If you have any comments, please speak to reception or submit feedback via our Friends and Family Test.
